What Is Sleep Apnea?
There are two kinds of sleep apnea: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and central sleep apnea (CSA). OSA occurs when the soft tissue of the throat obstructs the airway. Contributing factors for this condition include excessive weight and jaw position while sleeping Patients can regain a restful night’s sleep through a variety of different treatments and appliances.
CSA is not caused by physical obstruction, but from brain signals failing to reach the muscles that expand the lungs. Since CSA cannot be corrected through weight loss or reorienting the jaw, this problem requires the use of a CPAP machine.
If either form of sleep apnea is left untreated, the lack of oxygen during sleep can lead to restlessness, as well as a number of nervous system and cardiovascular health issues.
Diagnosing Sleep Apnea
When you come to Tilden Dental Group for sleep apnea therapy, we work with your primary care physician and arrange for a sleep study. This ensures that sleep apnea or any other conditions you have that interrupt sleep are accurately diagnosed. If it is determined that you have OSA, our Chicago sleep apnea dentists work with your primary physician to determine treatments to help you achieve restful sleep.
For certain patients with mild OSA, the use of an oral appliance adjusts the orientation of your bite during sleep. These appliances tease the jaw forward, creating an opening for air to easily flow through your throat. Our Chicago sleep apnea appliances are specially made to fit comfortably for each patient’s unique bite, and require little adjustment time.
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) Machines
If a patient has CSA, or is otherwise unable to correct their OSA with an oral appliance, Dr. Jordan and Zachary Tilden are able to help patients find a comfortable mask for a CPAP machine. We help patients to choose a nose piece that comfortably fits and allows for deeper sleep.
